Summary: In September, my husband and I took the Viking British Isles Ocean Cruise which stopped in the Orkney Islands. Several outside cruise reviewers suggested that the best way to see the island would be to hire our own guide because there are limited excursions offered by the ship. I researched private tour operators and chose Scapa Tours because of the many site offerings in addition to the very reasonable cost. We were picked up directly at the cruise ship pier by Stewart who drove us to all of the locations on the itinerary plus a few more! We were able to view all of the ancient and historical sites at our leisure without worrying about excess crowds from the tour buses. Stewart took us to some spectacular ocean views and unusual island sights that weren’t even included on the itinerary. Unfortunately we had to miss the distillery tour/tasting because it was closed on Mondays, the day we were there. The island tour lasted a full 5 hours, and it was without a doubt the best day of our entire trip despite the inclement weather! Thanks so much for a memorable day!

Summary: Stuart picked up as planned and brought us to the main attractions as expected but he brought us to some we hadn’t including cliff views, causeways and some highland cows. We saw way more than we thought and he was a knowledgeable and friendly guide throughout. He packed lots into the 5.5 hours we had on the Orkneys.

Summary: Anna was awesome! She picked us up right at our ship and off we went on a wonderful adventure! Anna shared her home with us in an engaging and informative manner. Learning from her was like touring with a friend. She even had some local snacks to share since we were so busy sightseeing, we didn’t have time for lunch. Summary: We did a private Scapa Tour to visit all the Neolithic sites in the Orkney Islands. We were picked up by taxi promptly from our cruise ship pier, and taken to many wonderful sites including Kirkwall, Yesnaby cliffs, Skara Brae, Unstan burial mound, Standing Stones of Stennis, and Ring of Brodgar. The driver was also kind enough to run us to an ATM and a drive around of the St. Magness Cathedral for pictures. Very friendly and reliable. Beautiful tour!

Summary: A really interesting and informative day! Ferry to ferry service and a great tour of Orkney- Skara Brae was a highlight, but thoroughly enjoyed it all. Our guide was full of local knowledge.

Summary: I had been in contact with Stewart a couple of times by email about arranging a private tour of the island on the day our cruise ship was in port. Stewart provided us with helpful information and several suggestions for things to do. On the day of our arrival, we were slightly delayed getting off the ship, but Stewart was very flexible. We had hoped to photograph puffins, so he drove us to Yesnaby Castle sea stack, sharing stories about life on the island along the way. It was just a 15-minute walk from the car park, and the view was absolutely stunning. Unfortunately, due to the strong wind and the early season, we didn’t see any puffins—but that didn’t take away from the experience at all. Stewart then took us on a scenic drive across the island, bringing us to the highest point, where we enjoyed a magnificent view of Kirkwall and our cruise ship. He later dropped us off in the center of Kirkwall, where we did some souvenir shopping. Stewart was incredibly helpful and kind, and we loved having the freedom to choose what to see and where to go. Ship-organized excursions often take you to places you’re not particularly interested in, and you might spend either too much or too little time at each stop. This private tour was a fantastic way to explore the island at our own pace and focus only on the things we cared about. If we ever return to Kirkwall, we would definitely book this tour again.

Summary: Donna was a great Guide! She had great information about the sights. We had as much time at each stop as we wanted and didn’t have to deal with others on a bus ! Worth booking for sure!!
